My HVAC needed servicing. The company that installed my furnace informed me they no longer serviced our area. The original company was meant to get back to me, but did not. I saw a local ad for Wilson River Electric LLC and called. Winter is upon us! Mike(electrician) gave me Billy’s #(HVAC) and he assessed my furnace quickly and discovered more than just cleaning/servicing maintenance. It’s Thanksgiving week. He ordered the motor-still barely under warranty and installed it plus maintenance 11/28-the day after Thanksgiving. He explained everything to me and is doing a follow-up tiny fix. They will be back in the Spring to service my AC. Communication and punctuality were 5 stars.Posted on Google![]()

An electrical service upgrade involves increasing the amount of electrical power available to your home by upgrading your main electrical panel, service entrance, and sometimes the utility connection itself. Most older homes were built with 100-amp or even 60-amp electrical services—adequate for the needs of decades past, but really insufficient for today’s energy demands.
A modern electrical service upgrade typically increases your home’s capacity to 200 amps or more, providing the robust power supply needed for contemporary living. This isn’t just about convenience; it’s about safety, efficiency, and positioning your home for the inevitable transition to an all-electric future.
Many homeowners don’t realize their electrical system is struggling until they experience persistent problems. Here are the telltale signs that it’s time to consider an electrical service upgrade:
Frequent Circuit Breaker Trips: If plugging in a hair dryer while the toaster is running sends you to the breaker panel, your electrical system is maxed out. This isn’t just annoying—it’s a warning sign that your circuits are overloaded.
Flickering or Dimming Lights: Lights that flicker when appliances cycle on, or rooms that dim when you start the washing machine, indicate that your electrical service is struggling to meet demand. This voltage fluctuation can damage sensitive electronics and signals an overtaxed system.
Reliance on Extension Cords and Power Strips: If you’re constantly juggling what gets plugged in where, using multiple power strips, or running extension cords throughout your home, you’ve outgrown your current electrical capacity.
Burning Smells or Warm Outlets: Any burning odor near your electrical panel, or outlets that feel warm to the touch, requires immediate attention. These are serious warning signs that your system is dangerously overloaded.
Old Two-Prong Outlets: Homes with predominantly two-prong, ungrounded outlets likely have outdated electrical systems that cannot safely power modern appliances and electronics.
Plans for Major Additions: Installing an EV charger, adding a hot tub, finishing a basement, or upgrading to electric heating and cooking all require significantly more power than older electrical services can provide.
One of the most compelling reasons to invest in an electrical service upgrade is electric vehicle ownership. EVs are no longer the future—they’re the present, and their popularity is surging. However, Level 2 EV chargers, which can fully charge your vehicle overnight, typically require 240-volt circuits with 40-50 amp capacity.
For many homes, especially those with 100-amp service or less, adding an EV charger isn’t feasible without an electrical service upgrade. Attempting to charge an EV on an inadequate system risks overloading your electrical panel, potentially causing dangerous situations or damage to your home’s electrical infrastructure.
Wilson River Electric can assess your current electrical capacity and design an electrical service upgrade that not only accommodates EV charging but also leaves room for future electrical needs. As more households move to multiple EVs, forward-thinking electrical planning becomes essential.
