My HVAC needed servicing. The company that installed my furnace informed me they no longer serviced our area. The original company was meant to get back to me, but did not. I saw a local ad for Wilson River Electric LLC and called. Winter is upon us! Mike(electrician) gave me Billy’s #(HVAC) and he assessed my furnace quickly and discovered more than just cleaning/servicing maintenance. It’s Thanksgiving week. He ordered the motor-still barely under warranty and installed it plus maintenance 11/28-the day after Thanksgiving. He explained everything to me and is doing a follow-up tiny fix. They will be back in the Spring to service my AC. Communication and punctuality were 5 stars.

Always On Power,
No Matter What.

Power outages are an inevitable reality for homeowners in the Pacific Northwest. Whether caused by winter storms, fallen trees, high winds, or grid maintenance, losing electrical power disrupts daily life, threatens food security, compromises comfort, and can even create dangerous situations for vulnerable family members. Wilson River Electric, an authorized Generac installer, helps homeowners explore backup power options that keep their homes running smoothly when the grid fails.

The Growing Impact of Power Outages

Power outages have become increasingly frequent and prolonged in recent years. Climate change brings more severe weather events, aging infrastructure struggles to meet modern demands, and wildfire prevention measures sometimes require planned shutoffs. A power outage that might have been a minor inconvenience decades ago now creates major disruptions in our technology-dependent lives.

During power outages, homeowners face numerous challenges:

Food Spoilage: Refrigerators and freezers lose cooling capacity within hours, potentially destroying hundreds of dollars’ worth of groceries and medication requiring refrigeration.

Heating and Cooling Loss: Depending on the season, power outages can leave your family dangerously cold in winter or uncomfortably hot in summer, particularly affecting young children, elderly family members, and those with health conditions.

Water System Failures: Homes with well water systems lose access to running water immediately when power fails, affecting drinking, cooking, sanitation, and basic hygiene.

Security System Disruptions: Security alarms, cameras, and smart home systems often fail during power outages, leaving your property vulnerable.

Communication Challenges: With internet and phone systems down, staying informed and connected during emergencies becomes difficult.

Medical Equipment Concerns: For families with members dependent on medical equipment like oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines, or powered wheelchairs, power outages create genuine health emergencies.

Business Interruptions: Home-based businesses grind to a halt without reliable power, resulting in lost income and missed opportunities.

The solution? Investing in reliable backup power options that keep your essential systems running regardless of grid conditions.

Standby Home Generators

Standby generators, also called whole-home generators, represent the premium backup power option for homeowners serious about power security. These permanently installed units automatically detect power outages and restore electricity to your home within seconds—whether you’re home or away.

Key Advantages:

Automatic Operation: Standby generators monitor your utility power 24/7. When power outages occur, they automatically start and begin powering your home within 10-20 seconds. When utility power returns, they automatically shut down and return to standby mode. No action required from homeowners.

Whole-Home Power: Unlike portable generators that power only a few circuits, properly sized standby generators can power your entire home, including HVAC systems, well pumps, kitchen appliances, security systems, and all lights and outlets.

Permanent Fuel Supply: Standby generators typically run on natural gas or propane from dedicated fuel lines, eliminating the need to store gasoline or manually refuel during power outages.

Weather Protection: Housed in durable, weather-resistant enclosures, standby generators operate reliably in any weather conditions, including the storms that cause power outages.

Quiet Operation: Modern standby generators operate much more quietly than portable units, minimizing noise disruption to your household and neighbors.

Extended Runtime: With connection to natural gas or large propane tanks, standby generators can run indefinitely during prolonged power outages without refueling.

Increased Home Value: A professionally installed standby generator system increases property value and appeal to potential buyers who recognize the importance of backup power.

Smart Technology: Today’s standby generators feature WiFi connectivity, allowing you to monitor system status, receive alerts, and review maintenance schedules from your smartphone—even when you’re away from home.

Understanding Your Backup Power Options

Not all backup power solutions are created equal. Understanding the various backup power options available helps you choose the system that best meets your family’s needs and budget.

Portable Generators

Portable generators represent the most basic backup power option. These gasoline or propane-powered units can be moved and stored when not in use, then deployed during power outages.

Advantages:

  • Lower initial investment
  • Portable for use in multiple locations
  • No installation required

Limitations:

  • Requires manual setup during outages
  • Limited power capacity
  • Must be operated outdoors due to carbon monoxide risks
  • Needs manual refueling
  • Cannot power whole-home electrical systems
  • Noisy operation
  • Requires storage space and maintenance
  • Cannot start automatically when power fails

Portable generators work for occasional, short-term power outages when you’re home to set them up and monitor operation. However, they provide limited power, typically running only a few essential appliances through extension cords—far from a comprehensive solution to power outages.
